Waterford Hills; MotorCity BMWCCA: June 17, 2022

Waterford Hills

About this event

Welcome to the Motor City Chapter BMWCCA!

Join us for our annual one-day high performance
driver's education (HPDE) event at Waterford Hills.
Conveniently located in metro Detroit, Waterford Hills offers
an invigorating driving experience for novice and expert alike.

This year, the event will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022.
What better way to start a summer weekend?

2022 marks our 18th consecutive year at Waterford Hills.

Motor City BMWCCA prides itself on offering some of the best instruction in HPDE. No matter your driving level, we will help you improve!

We are back to in-car instruction! Students will safely learn and develop high performance driving techniques, the driving line at Waterford Hills, and situational awareness through on-track and classroom experiences. In-car instructors are provided for all students, and solo opportunities are available if the student and instructor agree it’s appropriate.

Location: Waterford Hills Road Racing, 4770 Waterford Rd, Village of Clarkston, MI 48346. The track is situated on the grounds of the Oakland County Sportmen's Club, between I-75 and Dixie Highway (US 24).

Our driving groups: Participants will be organized into one of three driving groups (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) based on experience. Passing rules are more lenient for more experienced students. Our goal is to foster a safe and invigorating environment for everyone.

Taste of the Track. We will again provide our unique Taste of the Track sessions in the afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity for people who want to experience racetrack driving, but at controlled speeds. The rules are: (a) no helmets or tech inspection required, (b) a classroom introduction to high performance driving, and (c) lead-follow instruction (no in-car instruction) in small groups, with controlled straightaway speeds.

BMW CCA membership required. Under current BMW CCA rules, you must be a member or associate member of the BMW CCA to participate in this school. If you are not already a member or associate member, you can sign up before registering at the club's web site, www.bmwcca.org. We are also offering registration to non-members at a higher registration fee, but we encourage you to become a member or associate member before registration to speed up the process.

Covid-19. We have no idea what Covid-19 restrictions, if any, will be in place on the day of the school. However, we will follow all federal, state, and local Covid-19 requirements in effect at the time. Currently, we do not plan to require that vaccinated and unvaccinated participants be treated differently or to require masking (although you are welcome to wear a mask if you like). However, we will be asking certain questions on vaccination status as part of the registration process. Note: We are not offering lead/follow instruction at this school, except for Taste of the Track. If you are assigned an instructor but refuse an in-car pairing, you will not be allowed on track. Do not register for this school (except for Taste of the Track) if you would refuse an in-car pairing. You can review our Covid guidelines for track events HERE.

Breakfast, lunch, and water. Because we cannot predict what Covid-19 restrictions will be in effect on the day of the school, please bring your own food and water for the day.
We’ll take a break for lunch at midday. Bring bottled water to keep yourself hydrated!

Event requirements

Drivers. By the date of the school, all drivers must be 16 years or older and have a full driver’s license that does not require another qualified party to be a passenger in the vehicle. Note: For students under the age of 18, the student and a parent or guardian must sign a Parental and Minor Release Waiver (see Forms below).

Vehicles. We welcome cars of all makes and models! Unfortunately, we can't permit vans, minivans, trucks. If you have a capable SAV (BMW X3, etc) and would like to bring it, please contact our chief instructor at drivingevents@motorcitybmwcca.org for prior approval. Our apologies, but per the BMW CCA Driving Events Operations Manual, we cannot accommodate convertibles (soft or retractable hardtop), targa, or T-top vehicles. (Note: For our Taste of the Track group only, SAVs and convertibles are welcome without further approval.) Waterford’s local township ordinance noise levels require that all cars MUST have an operational commercially available muffler and that sound levels at the property line be kept below 75 dB. Cars not meeting this requirement will be excluded from the event.

Tech inspection. All vehicles (except for the Taste of the Track group) must pass a pre-school technical inspection performed by a licensed mechanic and complete the Vehicle Technical Inspection form (see Forms below). This is to be completed before the school. No onsite technical inspections will be performed.

Helmets. You will need a Snell SA or M-rated helmet (2015 or newer), except for our Taste of the Track group. Note: As a result of Covid-19 concerns, we no longer offer helmet rentals.

Food at the track. The Waterford Hills grill will be open for lunch.

Forms: All participants will need to read and complete (as applicable) the following forms and bring them to the event, where Motor City Chapter staff will collect them. All forms are available on our website HERE.

  • Vehicle Technical Inspection (except for the Taste of the Track group)
  • BMW CCA adult waiver
  • BMW CCA communicable disease waiver
  • Helmet certification (unless you are in the Taste of the Track group)
  • Parental and Minor Release Waiver (if the student is under 18)

Note: We no longer require a medical form. If you have a medical condition you would like the track's safety crew to know about, you can communicate with them directly. We'll also have available paper wristbands on which you can write a medical condition you'd like the crew to know about.

For questions or additional information regarding any of these requirements, please contact our chief instructor at drivingevents@motorcitybmwcca.org

Note that a separate application form must be submitted for each driver, even if you are sharing a car.

Please monitor the Motor City Chapter BMW CCA web site for up-to-date information.
